Getting Rodeo Ready in Alberta

How do you transform a mid-size, family-owned working dude-ranch and wedding venue into a memorable, customized rodeo for 900 guests? Consultation, collaboration, and a whole lot of outside of the box thinking.

To provide an authentically Canadian experience in one of our country’s most magical natural settings: the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. Inspired by the region’s famed Cowboy Trail, we took a page from the Calgary Stampede and recreated a scaled back version of the iconic rodeo.

A prestigious group of 900 top performing insurance brokers and their guests enjoyed a mini-Stampede complete with a hearty cowboy buffet, gourmet food trucks, rodeo show, an interactive Stampede midway complete with photo booths, leather bars, cowboy games, and plenty of live entertainment.

Big Challenge

Group size and limited venue availability left us with only one viable option to stage the event; a family-owned working dude-ranch, with only 1/3 of the needed grandstand capacity. Significant infrastructure improvements were also required to transform the venue from working ranch to rodeo-ready. By working hand-in-hand with the owners to find solutions to enhance the venue, we mitigated disruption to their normal course of business while re-engineering the space to accommodate such a large, high-end corporate group.

Many hands make light work. We broke each event component down to individual teams: a separate team member assigned to execute transportation, another to coordinate infrastructure improvements, and another to produce the event. To get rodeo ready, we:

  • graded ranch roads
  • reinforced ranch bridges to accommodate the heavy equipment needed for move-in and strike
  • upgraded electrical for atomic lighting, staging, sound
  • custom built décor and furniture elements
  • supplemented existing washroom facilities with executive washroom trailers
  • custom-built an engineered grandstand to accommodate up to 500 guests at a time.

Thanks to smart planning, and a team who doesn’t understand “off-the-shelf,” we delivered an out-of-the-box experience for the client, in an unexpected location.
